Many African industries grapple with unreliable power and high costs, holding back productivity. Persistent outages drive businesses toward diesel generators that are both expensive and carbon-heavy. Simultaneously, governments are advancing climate targets, but lack of financial scalability remains a critical barrier. There is an urgent need for reliable, affordable clean energy to unlock sustainable growth and help businesses meet global net-zero commitments.
PIDG, through EAAIF, invested US$45 million as part of a senior loan facility to scale CrossBoundary Energy’s distributed renewable pipeline. The facility supports solar, wind, hybrid solutions, and storage systems, enabling delivery of energy-as-a-service across several markets. This financing accelerates more than US$500 million of projects by 2027 and strengthens energy resilience for Africa’s industrial sectors. It enables businesses to lower their carbon footprint and costs, replacing diesel dependency with clean, reliable power.

The installed capacity will help offset c. 40,000 tCO2e in Madagascar and Rwanda.
The investment will facilitate the deployment of renewable energy for C&I customers displacing grid electricity and diesel generator sets, providing cost benefits and improved quality of service.
This transaction is expected to have demonstration and replication effects, improving the power sector’s resilience and increasing the renewable energy mix across the Pan-African region.
