About the role
Health, Safety, Environmental and Social (HSES) management is a strategic priority for PIDG, and we are seeking to strengthen the Impact team through the recruitment of an HSES Manager (maternity cover).
Role and responsibilities
Implement the PIDG Group HSES risk management framework
- Lead across the PIDG Group on assurance related to social compliance across the portfolio with a particular focus on human rights inclusive of modern slavery, child labour and safeguarding.
- Review and appraise new investments from an HSES risk perspective, including the identification of potential HSES risks and issues as early as possible in the project cycle, development of recommendations for PIDG company actions, and drafting of relevant project HSES management system documentation.
Support companies develop HSES due diligence terms of reference for projects, and reviewing the report recommendations when requested, as well as supporting with reviewing HSES action plans and ESHIA implementation across projects. - Define steps required to assist PIDG companies improve HSES management performance and meet the requirements of the PIDG Group HSES Polices, Standards and Procedures.
- Provide technical expertise on key issues related to HSES risks in PIDG operations and investments.
- Identify opportunities for adding HSES management value on a project. Engage with Impact team and PIDG companies on HSES improvements and updates.
Thematic focus and regional representation
- Support the Global Head of HSES on the implementation and reporting against the new 2030 PIDG Group strategy.
- Support on HSES data collation, analysis and disclosure reporting through PIDG data management systems.
- Lead project HSES management and compliance audits and, where required, attend and support accident and incident investigations.
- Provide training on HSES management issues to PIDG company staff and, where applicable, third-party investment staff, including contractors and consultants, where applicable.
- Support the development and growth of HSES best practices.
- Drive and sustain a culture across PIDG that puts safety as a central value and stimulates high levels of HSES management performance and continuous improvement.
Contribution to PIDG Impact team
- Engage on HSES with PIDG Members, including boards and committees, and external stakeholders.
Qualifications and education requirements
- A degree in science or engineering is essential.
- An advanced degree / qualification (postgraduate) in the HSES sciences or other relevant discipline highly desirable.
Skills
- Critical thinking skills, capacity to process complex issues, and ability to analyse, interpret and summarise large amounts of information quickly.
- Strong writing and research skills, combined with ability to filter, summarise and communicate complex relevant HSES issues.
- Able to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment and balance multiple projects, priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong organisational skills, including the ability to create and maintain work processes and keep work on track across multiple, matrixed teams.
- Good team player who can help motivate and lead groups.
- Ability to travel frequently across Africa or Asia and Southeast Asia essential.
- Excellent verbal and written English language skills. Knowledge in other languages is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and other business technologies.
- Able to build strong relationships with stakeholders – both internal and external.
- Integrity and discretion when handling confidential information.
- Ability to work with numerical information, plus analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Diplomatic approach and the confidence to liaise with high profile company staff and board members desirable.
Experience
- At least 8 years’ experience in ESG / HSES for finance organisations or relevant infrastructure/energy sector companies.
- Prior experience working in an area related to Environmental and Social Risk Management, impact investment, climate risk and policy, including experience and knowledge of global industry frameworks including IFC performance standards, industry sustainability standards, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Equator Principles, Impact Operating Principles for Impact Management (OPIM) and Task force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD Recommendations).
- Knowledge or experience in crisis management at an ESG / HSES level.
- Experience of working knowledge of Human Rights (modern slavery and child labour) risk management.
- Prior experience in evaluating clients and transactions for compliance with ESG / HSES policies and standards and / or impact standards.
- Experience of leading or contributing to disclosures and reporting of ESG / HSES.
- Consultancy, contracting and/or operational experience in Africa and / or Asia region would be advantageous.
