Challenge

In Senegal, high electricity costs remain a key challenge for commercial and industrial energy users and can affect competitiveness and long-term business growth. At the same time, there is growing demand for cleaner, more efficient and more cost-effective energy solutions. The government has committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in Senegal’s energy mix to 40 per cent by 2030 as part of its EUR 2.5bn Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) agreement signed with G7 members in 2024. The country is actively liberalising its regulatory frameworks to enable private generation and self-consumption as well as Independent Power Producer (IPP) investments.

Solution

Afreenergy Solar addresses the challenges around access to clean energy in Senegal by providing commercial and industrial (C&I) clients with on-site solar and storage solutions. Operated on a lease-to-own basis or through power offtake agreements, Afreenergy Solar’s solutions increase the reliability of energy supply and enable clients to control costs.

With support from PIDG through its project development solution, InfraCo, Afreenergy Solar is scaling its business, with a platform expected to support up to 27 MWp of C&I projects in Senegal, and over time, in selected markets across West and Central Africa. Undertaken in two phases across multiple sites, the project will incorporate rooftop solar and up to 6 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) depending on the needs of each client. By aggregating multiple sites and securing a range of customers across sectors such as agro-industry, logistics and other energy-intensive industrial segments, Afreenergy Solar will reduce per-site costs.

Impact

Planet

Using clean solar technology, Afreenergy Solar’s systems enable customers to decouple their growth from fossil fuels and polluting diesel back-up generators. It is anticipated that the project will avoid around 35k tCO2e emissions per annum. The project is also considering nature-enhancement opportunities.

People

With strong representation of women at both board and senior management levels, Afreenergy Solar is committed to advancing women’s participation in Senegal’s energy sector, a field that has traditionally been male-dominated.

Wider economy

Afreenergy Solar’s electricity will be around 30 per cent cheaper for customers than energy from the national grid, promoting economic growth.

Market transformation

The project supports government efforts to increase the share of renewables in Senegal’s energy mix. Once operating at scale, Afreenergy Solar is expected to catalyse further private capital flows into its C&I model, enabling the company to expand its footprint across West and Central Africa.
