About the role

The primary purpose of the role is to provide input into the regular impact review of prospective PIDG investments and the monitoring of the impact performance of existing PIDG investments. The Advisor will work closely alongside the Senior Impact Advisor in Nairobi for all deals generated by PIDG in Africa.

Role and responsibilities

Sustainable Impact Review of prospective investments

  • Provide quality input to the regular ex ante review of prospective deals as part of PIDG Sustainable Impact review and sign off process of new investments.
  • For selected investments, act as the impact expert associated to the investment team, engaging with the investment team or the client as appropriate.
  • For the investments for which the Adviser acts as the impact expert, produce the relevant documentation for the initial screening at ExCo and – if shortlisted – for the impact clinic and draft the relevant clearance in principle and / or endorsement notes for quality assurance, discussion and sign off.
  • For selected investments, play a quality assurance role of the impact review work conducted by the impact expert assigned to the investment.

Results update

  • For selected investments for which the Adviser acts as the impact expert associated to the investment team, ensure that conditions of Impact clearance and Impact endorsement, and relevant monitoring requirements are understood and acted upon by the relevant PIDG teams (investment and client relationship / legal / portfolio management teams) and by the clients.
  • For selected investments, ensure timely update of project results and keep the relevant records up to date in PIDG Compass.
  • Occasionally conduct monitoring visits of PIDG investments

Thematic and regional focus

  • Progressively develop PIDG applied expertise on specific themes relevant to PIDG Impact function (e.g. Climate Change & Gender, Diversity & Inclusion)

Contribution to PIDG Impact team

  • Contribute to continuous development of PIDG Impact team as a centre of excellence in infrastructure investment

Qualifications and educational requirements

  • Degree in relevant economics, finance, statistics, social science, international development discipline
  • Relevant experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis and presentation (desirable)

Skills and experience

  • 2 – 4 years’ experience in a relevant field, preferably within development finance institution, (impact) investment or management consultancy industry.
  • Understanding of private sector development, impact management and achieving development outcomes through investments.
  • Understanding of the infrastructure sector.
  • Understanding of assessing climate change risks and impacts of investments is desirable.
  • Understanding of gender, diversity and inclusion risks and opportunities as they apply to infrastructure investments is desirable.
  • Experience and a passion for working in developing countries, preferably in Africa is desirable
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while working with ambiguity.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently on multiple projects
