About the Private Infrastructure Development Group

The Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) is an innovative infrastructure project developer and investor which mobilises private investment in sustainable and inclusive infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa and south and southeast Asia. PIDG investments promote socio-economic development within a just transition to net zero emissions, combat poverty and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). PIDG delivers its ambition in line with its values of pioneering, partnership, safety, inclusivity, and urgency.

PIDG offers technical assistance for upstream, early-stage activities and concessional capital; invests in early-stage project development and project and corporate equity through its project development solution, InfraCo; its debt solution EAAIF (the Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund) is one of the first and more successful blended debt funds in low-income markets; and its guarantees solution, GuarantCo, provides credit enhancement and local currency solutions to de-risk projects. PIDG also supports a growing portfolio of local credit enhancement facilities, which unlock domestic institutional capital for infrastructure financing.

Since 2002, PIDG has supported 258 infrastructure projects to financial close, which provided an estimated 232 million people with access to new or improved infrastructure. PIDG is funded by the governments of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia and Sweden, and Global Affairs Canada. www.pidg.org

About the role

This role reports to the Chief Investment and Project Development Officer and leads InfraCo’s Investment Management team across Africa and Asia. You will lead a team of approximately 12 professionals across the UK, Africa and Asia, responsible for originating, executing and overseeing investments in infrastructure projects, corporates and related businesses. This includes supporting construction funding at financial close, expansion-phase growth, and investments in platforms and financing facilities aligned with PIDG and InfraCo strategy.

As a senior leader, you will set direction and priorities for the function, build commitment and capability across the team, and ensure disciplined investment governance through clear decision-making and escalation. Success in the role will be demonstrated by delivery against PIDG investment objectives, including building a high-quality pipeline, negotiating and structuring equity and/or convertible investments through to financial close, and ensuring effective handover into post-close portfolio oversight, value creation and exit execution in partnership with the Asset Management team. You will also strengthen company’s co-investment capability and market position across Africa and Asia.

Role and responsibilities

As Head of Investment Management, you will:

  • Translate PIDG’s strategy into a clear Investment Management operating plan (priorities, resourcing, timelines and measurable outcomes), adapting plans in response to market and project conditions.
  • Own and refine project investment strategy and portfolio approach (sector/thematic focus, risk appetite, return/impact objectives), translating this into clear annual priorities and pipeline plans.
  • Lead origination through to investment execution and financial close, ensuring effective handover into portfolio oversight and value creation.
  • Lead robust investment governance, valuation, structuring and including disciplined decision-making, clear escalation for approvals/deviations, and oversight of key risks and remediation actions.
  • Set clear objectives for the team; monitor performance and take timely actions to ensure delivery against PIDG
  • Lead financial management considerations for the function, including approving IM budgets and spend within agreed thresholds and annual plans.
  • Coach and develop team members, raising technical and commercial capability across the function.
  • Represent PIDG with senior stakeholders (including government counterparts and financiers) and act as a Director on SPV and project company boards where required.
  • Establish fit-for-purpose IM processes, tools and systems, working with relevant teams to drive consistency, quality and efficiency across transactions.
  • Partner with heads of other functions within global functions (including Legal, Finance, Business Development, Strategy and Portfolio Management, Sustainable Development Impact and HSES) to achieve organisational goals.
  • As a member of senior management team (InfraCo ExCo), contribute to shortlisting, investment/divestment decision-making and recommendations to the Investment Committee, and provide oversight of transaction and project development progress.

Through your Investment Management team, you will be accountable for:

  • Building and maintaining a strong network of developers, co-developers, investors, financiers and other partners to support infrastructure investments across Africa and Asia.
  • Identifying and evaluating co-investment opportunities, developing clear investment theses (risk/return, impact outcomes and strategic fit) and structured options analysis.
  • Leading commercial strategy and negotiations on key terms, aligning internal stakeholders to achieve acceptable risk-adjusted outcomes.
  • Structuring transactions and leading proportionate, high-quality due diligence, including coordinating inputs across internal functions and external advisers.
  • Challenging and shaping project plans and budgets; forecasting, managing and reporting progress against plans, including timely mitigation of key risks and issues.
  • Supporting investment execution activities as required (e.g., review of feasibility studies, negotiation of project documents, financing structure, stakeholder engagement, and monitoring and evaluation of impact).
  • Active portfolio management post-close, including covenant/obligation monitoring, issue resolution and stakeholder management, and supporting value creation initiatives.
  • Supporting exits and/or divestments post financial close.
  • Safeguarding PIDG’s reputation and acting as an ambassador PIDG at all times.
  • Participating as Director/Board member and shareholder’s representative in key portfolio companies (at least 2)
