With support from PIDG, Waterbus is expanding its safe, reliable passenger ferry service, linking communities on the shores and small islands of Lake Victoria. As it grows, the company is committed to recognising and nurturing local talent to deliver its services.
Twenty-six year-old Austine Ouma initially took on a labouring job for Waterbus to pay his school fees. However, his curiosity and growing interest in marine operations quickly set him apart from his fellow labourers.
“Upon completing my studies, I earned an internship position with the company, and they have supported me to obtain the necessary certifications to formalise my skills.”
Today, Austine serves as the company’s electrician, responsible for the electrical installation and maintenance of the vessels that are a lifeline for communities around Lake Victoria.
Austine’s role goes beyond just technical work—it is deeply impactful. His expertise ensures the vessels operate safely and reliably, directly benefiting countless passengers. Now with a family of his own, Austine takes immense pride in his journey and the lives he touches through his skills. His work keeps the Waterbus fleet running, making safe and dependable transport a reality for many.
Another employee whose career aspirations have been nurtured by Waterbus is Fredrick Odhiambo, the captain of one of the company’s distinctive vessels. His journey to the captaincy is testament to the transformative power of opportunity and hard work.
Speaking from the wheelhouse of his orange liveried Waterbus passenger vessel, Fred says, “I started as a boat builder, working at the company’s shipyard in Kisumu, Kenya. I was passionate about maritime service, and so I trained to become an Able Seaman (AB), progressing to First Officer, and now I am the captain of this vessel.”
As a Waterbus captain, Fred has a number of responsibilities, including ensuring the vessel’s safety, commanding operations with precision, and safeguarding the well-being of passengers. His dedication has not only earned him the respect of his peers but has also changed his family’s life, “With a stable income, I am able to educate my children, improving our living conditions and securing a brighter future for my family.”
Fred credits his inspiration to the late Malcolm Ormiston, the founder of Waterbus, whose mentorship instilled in him a deep love for the lake and a commitment to serving his community.
Today, Fred stands as a role model for other young people, proving that, with determination and integrity, they can chart a similar course for success.
