Albert is a Technician and Site Over-seer for KUDURA Mini grids roll out in Kenya's Turkana County.

As an electrical engineer, Albert has worked in green energy and rural electrification for some time, before joining KUDURA in 2023. “Safety is a key part of my role. I conduct toolbox talks with casual labourers, instructing them on wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE). I enjoy my job, I am learning new skills every day, particularly around safety and how to manage hazards.”

KUDURA is commissioning twenty-two rural mini grids across Turkana County in northern Kenya. Support from PIDG’s project development offering, InfraCo, has enabled the company to deploy these new solar-battery mini grids, and to densify existing mini grids to reach more customers in Busia County.

KUDURA uses an innovative multi-utility model which will see power used for the pumping and purification of water which customers will buy alongside their power. It is also installing security lighting to increase safety and support evening trading for newly electrified businesses. Working with micro-finance institutions, KUDURA also supports appliance microfinance to promote the productive use of renewable energy (PURE).

Albert summed up the impact of the KUDURA project simply, saying, “People don’t have any power in their homes, so these mini grids bring a very positive impact. Students can read. Women can cook. Storekeepers can buy fridges to sell cold drinks.”
