Supported by PIDG through its project development solution, InfraCo, Waterbus has grown its fleet of safe, passenger ferries. The fuel-efficient ferries connect communities living in Lake Victoria’s lake-side and island communities with public services, and support individuals to access opportunities for trade and employment.

Richard is a nursing officer in Mbita, Kenya. He has witnessed first hand the transformative impact of Waterbus passenger ferries for Lake Victoria’s communities.

Richard says, “Before its introduction, life was a struggle for many. Transport across the lake was unreliable and unsafe, with medical emergencies often resulting in tragic delays. For businesspeople and residents alike, the lack of dependable transport meant lost time, resources, and opportunities.”

He continues, “For businesspeople, Waterbus has become a game-changer. The service is not only affordable but also efficient, allowing goods to be ferried across the lake without requiring the owner to travel, saving time and costs.”  He continued, “Waterbus has opened new economic opportunities, making trade more accessible and seamless.”

Lina Jerry agrees. Living in Ugina Village, near the border of Kenya and Uganda, her business enterprises use Waterbus services regularly. A widow and mother of three grown up children, Lina is a prominent businesswoman in her community. She owns a thriving hotel, a busy retail shop, and several fishing boats, providing employment to fifteen people.

With Waterbus, Lina can transport goods efficiently, saving time and reducing costs. Its structured schedule and dependable service enable her to plan her operations better, ensuring that her businesses run smoothly. She says, “My ventures have flourished significantly, thanks in part to the introduction of Waterbus service, which offers me a safe, reliable, and affordable way to connect with markets and with my suppliers.”

Lina recognises Waterbus’ broader impact on fostering opportunity, connectivity, and progress for the people of Mfangano Island, and Richard expressed his feeling that the reliability of the Waterbus service has brought a sense of stability to the region, “Residents can travel, conduct their business, and access essential services without fear of delays.”
